Choosing Subjects of Interest out of a Variety of Elective Subjects

Students enter in the 10th grade, and graduate at the end of the 12th grade (there are approximately 192 students in each grade). The school is organized into five classes in each grade. In the first year, students acquire a wide range of basic knowledge and culture in a broad spectrum of fields. In the second and third year, a variety of elective subjects are offered to students. Through elective subjects, students acquire academic and specialized knowledge according to their intellectual interests and courses. For example, students can take a foreign language class such as French or Chinese. In addition, they can take some specialized classes taught by faculty members at Keio University.
Regarding some of the characteristics of our educational program, students are given challenging assignments in Japanese class. In the second year, students write a novel of more than 80 pages of 400-character manuscript paper and recite “Changhen ge” written by the Chinese poet, Bai Juyi. In the third year, students write a thesis on a literary work. These are intended to foster Japanese ability which is considered the foundation for every field.
