Spirit of Establishing Keio University
In the course of pursuing his studies, Yukichi Fukuzawa, the founder of Keio University, emphasized an honorable character and a paragon of intellect and morals. He aimed to be a person worthy of leading a society.
The “Mission of Keio University,” which Yukichi Fukuzawa left for his disciples, concisely describes his true aim.
“Keio University is not merely a place for academic pursuit. Its mission is to be a constant source of honorable character and a paragon of intellect and morals for the entire nation and for each member to apply this spirit to elucidate the essence of family, society, and nation. They will not only articulate this essence in words, but also demonstrate it in their actions, and by so doing make Keio a leader of society.”
In An Encouragement of Learning published in 1890, Yukichi Fukuzawa explained the importance of learning. He said, “A person, a family and a nation can be independent.” This spirit, commonly called “independence and self-respect,” is now the motto of Keio University.
Educational Philosophy of
Keio Girls Senior High School
Our school is not an organization where strict regulations control students and mold their characters. Ours is where schoolteachers and students respect one another's individuality and learn together in an open and free atmosphere.
Keio Gijuku has an educational affiliated system, which enables our students to proceed to Keio University under certain conditions. Therefore, cramming for entrance examinations is not what our school is aiming for. The educational philosophy of our school can be summarized as “liberation, development, and creativity.” The idea is for the students to be completely liberated from societal stereotypes and develop their talents so that they can create their own lives and a new world.
Education at Keio is conducted under the spirit of independence and self-respect established by our founder Yukichi Fukuzawa. We aim to develop our students’ intelligence, and sense and sensibility so that they will become self-sufficient while regarding other people’s situations and opinions, as well as their own.
