Keio Girls Senior High School Principal: Prof.Chikako Suzuki

When you step into Keio Girls Senior High School(KGHS), the first things that catch your eye are the Edo-era gate leading to the Japanese garden and the bridge that leads to the main building. The contrast that appears there made a strong impression on me when I first visited KGHS. This space, where the past and the future intersect, seems to symbolize the school's commitment to carrying on traditions while opening up new worlds.
Over 160 years ago, the founder of Keio University, Yukichi Fukuzawa, advocated for “independence and self-respect” in an era transitioning from isolation to open-door policies. “Independence and self-respect” means protecting one’s own dignity and making decisions and taking responsibility for oneself. Fukuzawa made this the fundamental spirit of Keio University. In the pursuit of knowledge, he placed great importance on “intellectual virtue” and “refinement of character.” He believed that a person with these qualities was worthy of leading society. This was the true purpose of Keio University and he entrusted his aspirations to the students.
Keio Girls Senior High School was established in 1950 as an affiliated school of Keio University. Over the past 70 years, our school’s atmosphere has been nurtured within the traditional ideals and culture of Keio University. Furthermore, our current educational philosophy cherishes “freedom, development, and creativity.” The high school years from the mid to late teens are a culmination of adolescence. We hope that the emotionally charged and curious high school girls will not lose sight of themselves, polish their intellects toward their respective dreams, and in the midst of our liberal school atmosphere, allow their invaluable qualities to flourish.
As each student passes through the gate of our school, we, the faculty and staff, hope that they will embrace the philosophy of Keio University and KGHS, and eventually join the many graduates who are already active and contributing to our society.
